Animated whiteboard microlearning video created in Doodly as a standalone learning asset.
This video introduces learners to the SMART goal-setting framework — Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound. The purpose of the video is to provide a quick, engaging, and practical learning experience that helps learners understand how to set effective goals in both personal and professional contexts.
By the end of this video, learners will be able to:
Define the five components of the SMART framework.
Differentiate between vague goals and SMART goals.
Apply the SMART framework to create their own actionable goals.
I started with the end in mind — determining that the learning outcome was for learners to confidently create SMART goals. Since the asset was designed as a microlearning video, I focused on brevity, clarity, and visual engagement.
I reviewed articles, training resources, and workplace productivity guides to identify the clearest definitions and examples of SMART goals. This ensured the video would provide both accurate and practical guidance.
The script was designed to follow a step-by-step structure:
Introduction to goal-setting challenges
Explanation of the SMART acronym
Practical example of transforming a vague goal into a SMART goal
Closing with a call to action for learners to try it themselves
The language was conversational and simple, aligned with microlearning best practices.
Using Doodly’s whiteboard animation style, I storyboarded the script into scenes with drawn icons, text highlights, and simple illustrations that reinforce each part of the SMART framework. This design choice aligned with the Signaling Principle, helping learners focus on key points.
I imported the script, selected animated characters and props, and synchronized the animations to the voiceover narration. Doodly’s drag-and-drop interface allowed me to create a smooth flow with hand-drawn transitions, reinforcing the explainer style.
Multimedia Principle: Combined narration with visuals to increase retention.
Segmenting Principle: Broke the acronym into clear, separate segments.
Personalization Principle: Script written in friendly, conversational tone.
The final video was exported with captions enabled and uploaded to YouTube, making it widely accessible.
Instructional Designer: Designed learning objectives, script, and structure.
Content Developer: Created visuals and animation in Doodly.
Video Editor: Synced narration, pacing, and flow for learner engagement.
