Immersive scenario-based learning video created with We Are Learning, designed as an interactive storytelling experience to teach warehouse safety and decision-making skills.
Educate warehouse employees on recognizing potential hazards, responding quickly to unsafe situations, and maintaining a safe work environment. This asset exists as part of a portfolio demonstration of instructional design and scenario-based video development, showing how narrative-driven learning can improve workplace safety awareness and decision-making.
This learning asset maps to the following learning outcomes:
Apply critical decision-making skills to prevent accidents in a warehouse setting.
Identify common workplace hazards and respond effectively.
Reinforce the importance of vigilance, teamwork, and proactive safety behaviors in maintaining a safe warehouse environment.
To support the learning goals for this asset:
Provide a realistic warehouse scenario to allow learners to practice hazard recognition and safe responses in a controlled environment.
Demonstrate active learning through situational engagement.
Showcase the use of narrative-driven video to enhance retention of workplace safety principles.
I began by defining the intended outcome for learners: warehouse employees who could recognize hazards, respond quickly, and support a safe work environment. Using backwards design principles, I identified the critical skills and behaviors to target, then selected a scenario that allowed learners to practice these skills in a realistic, story-driven format.
I conducted research on warehouse safety best practices, common workplace hazards, and adult learning strategies for scenario-based training. I also reviewed case studies, OSHA guidelines, and human factors research to ensure scenarios reflected realistic workplace challenges. Additionally, I explored storytelling techniques and multimedia principles to maximize learner engagement and knowledge retention.
Using ChatGPT as a starting tool, I crafted a conversational script tailored to adult warehouse employees, while also drawing on my research, instructional design expertise, and input from safety supervisors. Key focuses included:
Clear, approachable language for learners of varying experience levels.
Realistic warehouse scenarios, such as navigating busy aisles, handling equipment safely, and responding to hazards.
Highlighting critical decision points and safety actions to reinforce proactive behavior.
Maintaining a narrative that engages learners using relatable characters and cause-and-effect outcomes.
Aligning content with adult learning principles: practical relevance, problem-solving opportunities, and active participation.
Iterative review and refinement based on feedback from warehouse supervisors and safety experts.
Planning visual and interactive cues to support comprehension and guide learner attention.
I built the scenario-based video using We Are Learning, integrating characters, warehouse environments, and interactive decision points to immerse learners in realistic situations.
Visuals, text overlays, and character actions were synchronized with narration to reinforce key safety behaviors, reduce cognitive load, and emphasize learning points.
I applied multimedia and adult learning principles to enhance comprehension and retention:
Active learning: learners observe realistic behaviors and consequences.
Segmenting principle: scenario broken into clear decision points for manageable learning chunks.
Signaling principle: on-screen cues highlight critical actions.
Personalization principle: narrative delivered in an approachable, story-driven tone.
Intro/outro screens were added to reinforce objectives. Descriptive transcripts and closed captions were included for accessibility. Feedback from pilot viewers was incorporated to refine pacing, clarity, and scenario realism.
